The Norfolk village of Northwold lies within the Kings Lynn district of the county. The village was recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book and is located just 7 miles north of Brandon. For a 6 year period in the middle of the 19th century the village organised its own races, the first of which took place on Friday 4th March 1859 when staged on a course in Caistor. The opening Caistor Sweepstakes was won by Captain Elwes’ Dandy who beat Cinderella. The next year the nomadic meeting was held at Great Grimsby, followed by North Wold on Monday 21st January 1861. Meetings continued annually until the final card was staged on the Brocklesby course at North Wold on Tuesday 21st March 1865. The newspapers commented’ this usually excellent meeting was much out of form this year owing to the much-regretted decease of Mr P Barnard, principal promoter of the sport’. |
